More ADHD and Food

Last week, I wrote about the natural treatment of ADHD through diet. Today, I would like to talk (well, actually write) about a research done by Dr Feingold, an allergy specialist who found in the mid 70’s that 30-50% of hyperactive kids improved when they switched to a diet free of artificial colors, artificial flavors and a group of substances called “Salicylates”, which occur naturally in many fruits.

ADHD and Food

Many times, I have protested against the inflation in ADD and ADHD diagnosis. I believe way too many kids are labeled with ADD or ADHD when there is some other explanation for their behavior. In this post, I want to share with you some things you can do to greatly help kids with learning difficulties and perhaps un-label them.

The good news: changing the kids’ diet can help!

Curing Allergies

Very often, I meet parents who present their kids as suffering from allergies – nuts, milk, pollen, wheat – the list is long and the kids sniffle, wheeze, develop rashes and are restricted in their access to places and food. This is very unpleasant and even hopeless, because most parents and kids believe that allergies cannot be cured. Well, they can!

Healthy Eating by Shock Treatment

Unless there is something wrong with them, all parents want their kids to be healthy and eat well. With so many supermarkets and so many items on the shelves that are mostly processed, full of food colors, additives and lots of sugar, keeping your kids healthy is not easy. Not easy, but more important than ever!

Heavy Thoughts

In the past few months, I have been delivering a program about diversity and acceptance at various schools. In one of my classes, the kids asked about being angry at people and carrying this anger. So we had a serious talk about forgiving and letting go.

Kids are Like Mice

Yesterday, during a session with two of my parenting clients, they asked me again, “Why do you send your kids to school?” My answer was “Because kids are like mice – they need friends”. Research on mice and relationship has found that mice that spent their time with other mice live longer – as a matter a fact, twice as long – than mice who lived on their own. Happy kids, just like happy mice, need company and this is the main reason for sending kids to school.

How to Start the New Year with a Clean House

Every year, people go through some form of cleaning. Cleaning gives a good refreshing feeling of a new start. As if the old and the dirty is an obstacle to moving forward. Cleaning the house is a task that not many people like. Parents find it necessary, but it takes away very important and valuable family time.

How to Make Your Kids Smarter

If you want your kids to study well and succeed in everything they do, first you need to make sure they have the right fuel to make their body function. Many people think that success at school is totally connected to how smart kids are but unfortunately, kids’ “smartness” is highly effected by the way they manage their body.

Who Says Fast Food is Bad for Kids?

Woman eating McDonald's french fries

I think many children hear negative expressions about fast food, when in fact, not all fast food is bad. There are many kinds of fast food that are very healthy and can be made in a short time at home or at a commercial outlet. Sometimes, the faster it is to make the food, the fresher and healthier it is.

It is true there are many places where you can get fast junk food containing mostly fillers, sugar and fat, but why not change the whole concept of fast food and teach our kids that what is important is the quality of the food, not the speed of making it.

How to Raise Food-Smart Kids

These days, when children’s eating habits have led to an increase in obesity, parents’ responsibility to raise food-smart children has increased too.

It is the quality or the nutrition in the food we give our kids, coupled with the teaching of good habits, that will determine our kids’ health as children and later as grownups.
