Choices and Illusions

Essential Pillars of Success

Since I was 16, I was fascinated with the human mind. When I discovered my ability to choose my life, I said to myself I needed to remember that moment in my life, the time when I passed from being part of the herd to being a leader. From a confused state of mind, I changed to being clear, successful and happy. Straight afterwards, I also got a boyfriend (guess who) and that made life even more fun.

I remember the library as one of my favorite places. Like James Redfield says in The Celestine Prophecy, I believe the people we meet are not there by chance. Well, I have always thought the books I happen to read are not there by coincidence. Our school librarian was very happy I was there every day, taking a book and actually reading it. She used to welcome me happily every day and say, “Ronit, I have just the right book for you”. She would then hand me a book about behavior, psychology, morals and the human mind. One day, she brought me a mind research book that talked about the brain and philosophy. I think this book started my journey in the research world, learning as much as I could about how the brain works and giving me my greatest advantage in the special education arena. My rule was, is and will be…

What do I Think?

In this part of the Interview with Myself, you will discover questions about your way of thinking, your value and your beliefs. If you have a solid, well-defined answer for a question – excellent! It means you are confident in this area. If you are not sure, give the question some thought and discover what you really think about it.

Happy Wish List for a Happy Year

Wow, it is already 2009 and I hope you have a huge list and many wishes for the new year. Every year, Gal and I sit with the kids and write lists of wishes and goals for the year to come. It is a ceremony that is most important to me and I nag until we find time to sit and write our wishes down.

Dumb Parents?

If you have ever wondered how dumb parents can be, wonder no more. I believe the parents in the story “Parents Fight over Which Gang Toddler Should Join” take the lead for more than one reason. If there is ever a parenting qualification exam, they would fail miserably. This may be how it seems, but is it the whole story?

Why You Should Not Ask "Why"

Sometimes, our expectations are not fulfilled and our immediate response is to find the reason. So we start asking “why” in an attempt to bring order back into our world, but this can get us in trouble if we do not keep our focus positive.

What if

Money

Last time, I wrote about the conflict between the two minds – the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. Confusion is a big sign of the war between the two minds and getting to know ourselves is a good way to find balance, self esteem and happiness.

The “if” part of the interview with myself deals with our most precious desires to love, to be loved, to have control, power, stability, success and self esteem. It is very important for us to be honest with ourselves and discover what we want in life.

War Between Two Minds

Man with muscly arms drawn behind him

To increase your self esteem, it is good if you know what you can appreciate in yourself. People with low self esteem simply do not realize how much or how well they do things. For many of the big questions in life, they answer “I’ve never thought about it” or “I don’t know”.

The subconscious mind, however, knows very well what it thinks about itself and many times, we react in a way that we do not understand.

We want to be fit, but we eat too much, we want to have good relationships, yet we fight a lot, we want to succeed, but we do not even try. We want to reach out and touch someone, but instead we lose contact.

This happens when the conscious mind and the subconscious mind are not going in the same direction. The conscious mind does not know why it does that to itself.

How do You Wash the Dishes?

Only when you see someone else washing the dishes in a strange way do you notice that there is more than one way of doing things. When my mom came over to our place and watched a friend of mine washing the dishes, she almost fainted.

The Tao of Parenting

Before you start it, parenting seems daunting. You could be in for years of giving up your personal freedoms to one or more creatures who become more and more demanding as they grow older, while you run around trying to satisfy their insatiable appetite for your time and your money. Indeed, without using The Tao of Parenting, this could be the case, but it does not have to be.

Happiness is in Your Hands

From the first year of my Special Education studies, I had this debate with Gal. Gal, who has a degree in Biology and Computer Science, thought that people’s behavior was all genetic and I, as an educator, believed it was all taught and could be changed. For years, we had those discussions. Over time, I learned there are many things that are mostly hereditary and Gal learned that even they can be changed with education.
