Years ago, when I studied Reiki, I discovered that when I held my hand on a painful part of the body, it helped things calm down. I also found out my sister could feel me sending her Reiki (life energy) while she was on the other side of the world. My conclusion from the course was that although I do not know what really happens to the body when someone holds a hand over it or how sending imaginary energy to another person far away help, these things work.
For a long time after that course, I kept checking my Reiki abilities. When my kids felt a bit sick, when they fell down and when they cried, I would put my hands on their body and within 5 to 10 minutes, the pain would disappear. Whether it was because they stood still for a while, because the warmth of my hands felt good on the painful area or because of some psychosomatic effect, it worked like a charm.
One day, we went on a picnic with friends. One of the friends’ children, who was about 12 years old, had had pain in his elbow for a while and could not participate in the other kids’ play. At first, we thought it was just an excuse, but he stood next to them and felt really bad. When I asked him if he wanted me to Reiki his elbow, everyone laughed. He was very skeptical and, to be honest, I was skeptical too, because I had made a choice not to use Reiki professionally and all my attempts had been on my family members, which made me think that maybe it had worked because of my love for them.
At one stage, I said to the boy, “What do you have to lose?” and he agreed and sat on the picnic table holding out his arm. I cupped his elbow with my hands and after 5 minutes, he looked at me in shock and said, “I don’t believe it! The pain is gone”. He then went happily to play with the kids.
My kids often describe it as a touch that makes us relax. Luckily for me, Gal came to do the course with me, so imagine how relaxed we both feel when we touch each other…
The Reiki Girl
I think that Eden, my 22-year-old daughter, is full of Reiki. She does not need to touch you to make you relax. You just relax when you are around her. It is amazing how her presence helps people around her calm down. There can be tension, anger and arguments and as soon as she steps in, everyone settles down and starts sorting out the differences until pretty soon, everybody smiles.
When Eden was 16 and had finished high school (she is also smart), she worked at a bar/restaurant that was open 24 hours a day. People came in every hour of the day, ate and drank like crazy. She was underage and could not serve alcohol, but it did not take the supervisor long to realize that whenever she was around the troublemakers, there was less trouble.
At first, she just happened to deal with some problematic people and solve any complaints they had. Later on, she served the drunk section (where they seat all the people that who drink a lot and start acting silly) couple of times and that was enough evidence she did something to them that made them calm down. After two weeks, she was in charge of the drunken section, still could not serve alcohol herself, but was able to calm the worst drunks getting upset because their drinks did not arrive quickly enough.
It hit us then that whenever Eden is around, she has this affect on people. At first, we thought it was just us, because we love her so much that her presence makes us feel calm and relaxed, but hearing how people talked about her and about her experience with others, we realized she was a true “Reiki girl”.
When Eden was studying event management, she had a final assignment to run an event in a group. They decided to go after the Guinness World Record for the biggest Twister game. Her teacher suggested she be the coordinator and the group started preparing for the even.
Sure enough, the wonderful idea became complicated, because the group formed two camps, each pushing towards a different kind of an event. Gal and I think her teacher knew why she put Eden in that position, because she managed to resolve the tension in the group and lead them to a successful and profitable event.
Remote Reiki
Years ago, when my aunt went through chemotherapy, she used to talk to a woman who sent her Reiki on the phone the day before each treatment. It was funny at first, but since then, I have learned I could send Reiki to my sister who lives on the other side of the world and she could tell when I did it even when we did not arrange it. Spooky, I admit, but it worked, so I stopped questioning it. In fact, I find that questioning Reiki makes me enjoy it less.
I wondered about Eden and her remote Reiki ability. I searched for incidents in her life when she did that when she helped someone without being present.
One year, Eden worked as a secretary at a law firm. In the first month of her work, her manager gave her a pile of unpaid jobs to collect payment for. The manager, a wonderful woman with a background in psychology (which is why she and Eden formed a great bond), had accumulated all those jobs during the previous year and when Eden had a bit of spare time, she decided to follow up on them. So she came to Eden and said, “Here is a list of clients who haven’t paid. Please follow up”. At the end of the week, Eden gave her the pile back and said, “All done. They’ve all paid”.
Her manager was shocked. She asked, “What did you say?”
Eden said, “Hi, I’m Eden, I am calling from … and I’m following up on your payment for …”
Her manager said, “But I called them myself and said exactly the same thing and they didn’t pay”.
No one knows how she does it, but I believe it is not the words she uses. There is something calming in her voice that overcomes any resistance.
Hold on to your lucky charm
Last month, we had a social gathering with friends and the discussion was around young adults, university students, living at home. Our friends were shocked Eden did not want to leave home and find a place on her own. We told them it would be silly with her timetable of university studies full time, working part time, ice skating, Salsa, Hip Hop, piano and going out dancing in the Valley on weekends. “When my kids finish Grade 12, I’m going to kick them out”, one of our friends said (although I doubt she will).
When I asked them, “If you had Eden as your daughter, would you kick her out?” they said, “Oh, no, Eden is not a typical young person. She’s a treasure”.
There are many techniques to bring calm into the house. You can control the temperature with a fireplace on cold nights. You can control the smell in the house with oil burners, floor cleaners and the smell of fresh food. You can hire a color specialist to help you choose the right colors for your feature walls or a Feng Shui master to give you tips to bring you luck, peace and fortune. Or you can raise lucky charms like Eden and keep them.
Then, your biggest challenge will be to let them go when they finally decide it is time…
Happy parenting,
Ronit
