10 Ways to Encourage Your Kids

Posted November 14th, 2007 by Ronit Baras in Emotional Intelligence, Parenting, Personal Development, Relationships

Encouragement is parents’ way to gently shift their kids’ attention to their desired behaviour, thinking, attitude and action.

Researches have suggested that academic success is not a result of natural born talent but a result of persistence, encouragement and motivation to succeed.

In order to effectively use encouragement, it is good to understand that encouraging a kid to do something focuses on the good things and sends kids a message “You are OK”.

Encouraged kids learn to trust themselves and continue the positive behaviour. They are also more motivated. Discouraged kids, on the other hand, are motivated by fear.

To understand what motivation by fear is, imagine your child riding a bike. Which is going to get them to their destination faster and more safely, cycling towards something and looking forward or cycling away from someone and looking backward?

Here are a few things you can encourage your kids to do:

  1. Encourage your kids to say how they feel
  2. Encourage your kids to have friends
  3. Encourage your kids to try new things
  4. Encourage your kids to play a lot
  5. Encourage your kids to eat healthy food
  6. Encourage your kids to read
  7. Encourage your kids to take time off
  8. Encourage your kids to participate in family activities
  9. Encourage your kids to have a hobby
  10. Encourage your kids to help

And if they do something you do not like? Just ignore it and keep focusing on the positives.
