Are Your Kids Stress-Free?

Are Your Kids Stress-Free?

Stress is considered the number one killer in our society. Whereas in the past, a healthy lifestyle included eating well, sleeping well and exercising enough as the main characteristics, today, being stress-free is another important one.

As a parent, I am sure that you feel stressed many times a day. Juggling home tasks, quality time with your partner, work and attending to all your kids' needs can be demanding. Stress becomes part of everyday life. Stress is a feeling of tension or pressure because of something that happened in the past, something that is happening now or fear of something that might only happen in the future.

Stress and constant pressure can make you unhappy and unhealthy. The most common problems associated with stress are insomnia, migraine, indigestion and depression.

Firstly, to move into a stress-free zone, you need to examine the things you are stressed about. Sometimes, the feeling is there and yet there is no clear understanding of what it is. PMS produces such a feeling: the body is tight, and if you do not have a good record of your last period, you may not even know that this is the cause of your stress (PMS is a source of stress for women and for men…). Finding the cause is important.

Whenever you feel tense, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Am I worried about something that happened in the past?
  2. Am I worried about something that is happening to me now?
  3. Am I worried about something that I believe is about to happen in the future?

StressNot all stress is bad. When we talk about basic needs (food, warmth and safety), stress can function as a motivator to ensure that these basic needs are preserved. However, being under stress for too long gradually wears you down and negatively affects your performance and your health.

If your kids are stressed, use the questions below to understand your own level of stress and the areas in which you need to help your kids, to teach them how to be stress free.

Remember, for kids, Mom and Dad are role models. If Mom and Dad live in stress, the kids adopt the same lifestyle because they do not know any better way. Many times, when they finally grow up and understand this, they are already set in their ways so much that it is hard for them to change without professional help.

  • Does your kid find it hard to express their feelings?
  • Is your kid running late and short of time most of the time?
  • Does your kid find it hard to relax?
  • Does your kid seem to be unhappy?
  • Is your kid afraid of new things?
  • Is your kid terrified of change?
  • Is your kid grumpy in the morning for no apparent reason?
  • Is your kid preoccupied with what he or she eats?
  • Is your kid irritated by others?
  • Does your kid have problems sleeping?
  • Does your kid lose his or her temper often?

Things you need to know about Stress

  1. Are Your Kids Stress-Free?No one is totally free from stress. We all experience periods in our life when we are stressed, tired and tense. It is not the end of the world.
  2. The difference between people and their levels of stress is not to do with what happens to them throughout the course of their lives, but with how they react to what happens to them.
  3. Each person has a different resistance to stress. You can gradually increase your resistance.

    Hi Ronit

Great article as usual. Its very true - my mother is a person who is constantly stressed and as a result I used to stress about everything an anything until I realised what I was doing - but its very hard to change - my husband tell me I still stress too much over nothing - but not as much as before!

    Tina,

I remember working with kids that were soooooo stressed, it was affecting everything they did. When I met their parents, I knew where it came from. Their parents were stressed and couldn't think properly. Everything was a problem, future was dark and negative. Kids do not have any way of saying that this way of life is wrong and not healthy, they think everyone is the same, all houses do the same thing. Their definition of normal depends on the lifestyle at home.

On the other hand, only we can say if we are stressed or not, there is fine line between stressing and being organised, there is a fine line between procrastination and not caring. We have to find it ourselves.

    Are you really stressed?
    Love and happy day

meditation is also one of the best way to get rid of it.Normally business people undergo more stress when compared with a normal man.so it's better to drive it away.Stress can affect children, adolescents and adults. Though the stress factor may be different in different age groups, the outcome is more or less the same

    Sandeep,

Yoga seems like a very popular way to reduce stress, combining breathing, meditation and physical exercise.

Life coaching is another way with growing popularity.

I know kids cannot be totally stress free but I believe we can try and work towards it.
It is just a goal we need to see in front of us and aim towards.

We have to ensure that the life of a student is stress free. Other wise we will not be facilitating the natural growth of their faculties

I guess we have to ensure that life of kids are stress free if we want them to experience natural growth
    And
we have to ensure that life of parents are stress free if we went them to experience natural growth as parents
and I could go on and on and on about all kinds of people.

Stress is a big enemy of our society and it blocks us from experiencing joy, happiness and yes, you are right, also growth.
Stress is an obstacle to many great things in life and it does not skip any age. kids, teens, students, workers, parents, bosses...
I think our perception of stress is not healthy

    wishing you stress free days

The sad reality is that there are so many parents who are completely oblivious to the fact that their child could be stressed. Most adults find it extremely difficult to even relate to children and understand their needs. I think this is getting worse as we age as a civilization. Not sure what the reason is. I think every govt should organize classes for new parents so they can deal with children better. Healthy stress free childhood directly equals a healthy life.

  • http://www.ronitbaras.com Ronit Baras

    Hi Mike,

From your mouth to GOD or it is better to say from your mouth to the govt.
Many adults say to me, kids have it easy today and I think it makes them feel better with themselves. No, kids do not have it easy today, it gets harder and harder. Stress is number 1 killer in our life and every year it starts earlier.

I think stress free childhood is possible to give our kids but we need to do something, different, to make it happen.

    Thanks

Hi Ronit, thank you for a great article. Healthy diet that supports the adrenal glands is also very important. Children today are getting way too much sugar, which is unhealthy for the adrenal glands - the master stress glands. Eating a plant based diet with lean protein provides good building blocks for the functioning of adrenal glands and therefore smoother coping with stress.

    Simona,

    Thank you.

I don't know how much we can emphasis the healthy diet for kids. I think the word "diet" has such bed connotation that kids and diet -just doesn't feel right.

I think that I am a lucky mother since my kids eat very healthy. I was a very unhealthy kid and spend days in hospital.

I wish all parents take responsibility on their kids health by buying fresh food and less processed food.

Healthy kids can help parents handle their own stress too.

    Thanks
    Ronit

It is good to try and get into a stress free zone for at least a few minutes a day, and a good way to do this is through meditation. But since we can't avoid all sources of stress in our life, i think it is equally as important to learn effective coping strategies to deal with stress. It is only when stress becomes overwhelming does it start to become a noticable problem, so if children can learn proper coping strategies that will help to lessen the load a little and also benefit them greatly when they are older and experiencing a greater range of stresses.

  • http://www.ronitbaras.com/index.php/about/ Ronit Baras

    David,

I think that some people don't even know that the stress free zone exist. They are so overwhelmed with life that they think that this is life.

I think you are right we need to teach coping strategies ( Emotional Intelligence) to deal with stress and overwhelm before it comes.
Stress is a killer and only when parents and educators start thinking years ahead, they will understand that without math and A in English but with coping mechanism kids can be still successful but not the other way.

    Happy parenting

You can say that our society is really driving a hard bargain tour children's lifestyle. I never had too much to worry about when I was young. As a parent I try to be there for them anyway I can, because I know it's tough!

  • http://www.ronitbaras.com/ ronitbaras

     I agree!
I think it is not as easy for children these days.
When people say to their kids, when I was a kid it was harder, I think they are in denial. It is harder to be a kid today.

    Thanks Simona

I think we have so many "sugar free "ads that it makes people consume too much sugar.
Sugar is like a drug. it makes you feel good temporary and next time you need more of it.
